What is included in the adoption fee?All of our animals come with age and species appropriate vaccinations (distemper, kennel cough, rabies) and have been tested for either heartworm or FIV (feline AIDS) and FeLV (feline leukemia virus). Each animal is treated for fleas and intestinal parasites, and given preventatives. We microchip each animal and if they are not already spayed/neutered, an appointment is scheduled as soon as possible. Adoption fees help cover the costs of the initial intake protocols and continued care of the animal.
-
Do you adopt out of state? We do allow pets to be adopted out of state, but with a few restrictions. Any animal being adopted across state lines MUST be spayed or neutered before adoption, no exceptions. The adopter must also understand that the adoption contract states that a pet must be returned to our facility if they are unable to keep it for any reason.
-
What happens if the pet I am interested in gets adopted by someone else?We often get multiple applications in for the same animal. We go in order of application approval, NOT in order of application submission. If the pet you are interested in gets adopted and your application has been approved, it will stay on file for six months.
-
Can I become a Foster if I have pets of my own?Yes, we welcome pet owners as foster homes! Please keep in mind that there is always a health risk when exposing your pets to other animals (in any setting), so we require proof that all pets who currently reside in the home are up to date on vaccinations. The number of pets in the home cannot exceed SIX, including the incoming foster(s). However, a litter of puppies or kittens under 16 weeks old is considered the equivalent of ONE pet. Foster pets will not be placed in homes with intact animals of the opposite sex unless it has been determined the animal is too young to breed.
-
What kind of animals need foster care?• Puppies and kittens under 12 weeks old • Mothers with nursing litters • Litters without mothers and need to be bottle-fed • Dogs and cats with medical conditions or injuries • Dogs and cats who do not cope well in the shelter environment
-
What expenses are involved with foster care?Foster families provide housing, food, bedding and toys for the animals in their care. They also provide exercise, socialization and lots of love! Almost Home provides all medical care for animals in foster homes, including vaccinations, medications and spay/neuter surgery.
-
How long do animals need to stay in foster care? The typical foster stay is two weeks to two months, depending on the needs of the individual animal(s) in your care. The timeframe of each foster situation will be discussed with you ahead of time.
